Median CPI

  • Description: The Cleveland Fed calculates the median CPI and 16 percent trimmed-mean CPI based on data released in the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ monthly CPI report by excluding extremes and focusing on the center of the distribution of price changes.
  • Benefits: By omitting outliers, the median CPI and 16 percent trimmed-mean CPI can provide a better signal of the underlying longer-term inflation trend than either the all-items CPI or the CPI excluding food and energy (or core CPI).
