The Changing Nature of Our Financial Structure: Where Are We Headed? Where Do We Want To Go?

Changes in the financial markets haveblurred the distinctions between banksand other depository institutions, andbetween depository institutions andother financial businesses. In the midst of the blur, calls forreform have been coming from allcorners, including financial institutions, regulators, the Administrationand Congress, and the general public. The consensus is that reform is needed, but consensus ends there. Banks wantto go into other businesses. Other businesseswant to enter the banking business.Consumers want better servicesat lower costs. Regulators are concernedabout increasing risks.
