The Emerging Service Economy

Alice and the Dormouse in Lewis Carroll’s classic story offer a lesson about human nature that can be applied to our economy. Change often produces uncertainty and anxiety. When the economic environment changes, our anxieties are frequently reflected in political and legislative action.

The views authors express in Economic Commentary are theirs and not necessarily those of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland or the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. The series editor is Tasia Hane. This paper and its data are subject to revision; please visit clevelandfed.org for updates.
