Consumers and COVID-19

Announcement

The final scheduled update of the Consumers and COVID-19 page was on May 4, 2022.

  • Background: The Cleveland Fed maintained a survey of consumers for their views on how they were responding to COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus of late 2019, and how COVID-19 was likely to impact the economy.

Background

Description

The novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and the virus’s spread across the globe have caused human suffering and significant loss of life in the United States and around the world. The virus and the steps taken to slow its spread have produced large-scale economic disruptions and job losses. In an effort to understand the resulting economic impacts, researchers at the Cleveland Fed have been maintaining surveys of consumers to capture how consumers’ beliefs and expectations have changed over time as the pandemic has unfolded. This website captures aggregated results from those surveys.
