Media Contact

Cleveland Fed researcher Stephan Whitaker will present new findings from his analysis of migration patterns during the pandemic in a special FedTalk program on Thursday, March 25, 2021, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET.

At the program, open to the general public, Whitaker will discuss:

  • This report, which finds the real story behind the widely reported flight of residents from urban neighborhoods during the pandemic.
  • Where people are heading when they leave urban neighborhoods or high-cost metros.
  • Migration patterns related to COVID-19 deaths, business closures, homebuying, age and income.
  • In addition, Whitaker will present new findings from soon-to-be-published research. This will include estimates of how many people have already migrated from high-cost regions to lower-cost metros and small metros, towns and rural areas during the pandemic.

Advance registration is required. The online webinar is available beginning at noon ET. Audience Q&A will follow the presentation.
