Central Banking Game

In this activity, students will learn about the role of central banks, including the Federal Reserve, in a world economy. The game highlights the challenges of balancing stable prices (inflation rate) and full employment (stylized as Gross Domestic Product growth rate) amid a volatile economy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate how interest rates are the key mechanism that central banks currently use to impact price stability (inflation rate) and full employment (stylized as the Gross Domestic Product growth rate)
  • Analyze how market forces impact central bank actions
  • Explain the role of the Federal Reserve in the US economy and discuss the Fed’s national economic goals of price stability and maximum employment

Career Clusters

In this lesson, students will be able to complete a Venn diagram to learn about various occupations and identify skills and interests that align with their career preference. In addition, students will complete a worksheet that includes follow-up questions to assess their career path based on the Venn diagram.

Programs

Danny Dollar Academy

Danny Dollar Academy is a free financial literacy program facilitated by the Northern Kentucky University Center for Economic Education and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. The program promotes entrepreneurship, personal finance, civic responsibility, and smart financial decision-making to students in grades 3, 4, and 5.

Danny Dollar is based on a financial literacy curriculum that accompanies the best-selling children’s book Danny Dollar Millionaire Extraordinaire: The Lemonade Escapade by Ty Allan Jackson.

As part of the program, which runs November 2021 through April 2022, educators will:

  • Receive a suite of award-winning financial literacy curriculum (available as a printable PDF, publication, or Google Doc)
  • Receive a suite of English language arts curricula (available as a Google Doc)
  • Gain access to a series of short videos about important financial literacy concepts
  • Participate in a virtual live Q&A session with the book’s author
    • Pick one of the following dates (registration coming soon)
      • 01.31.2022 @ 9:00–9:45 am EST
      • 02.18.2022 @ 9:00–9:45 am EST

Career Exploration Series

The Career Exploration Series is a personal finance and career exploration program that invites students in grades 6-8 to learn about budgeting, saving, investing and more. Through the program, students will gain awareness of career opportunities and learn how to make smart financial decisions to better prepare for life after high school.

This program:

  • Aligns with Ohio and Kentucky Learning Standards
  • Builds skills students need to success in our competitive economy

Activity Topics

  • 6th Grade: Financial Decisionmaking and Budgeting
    • Save or Spend Challenge: Students will gain a better understanding of how to build a budget and how spending and saving choices can affect financial goals
  • 7th Grade: Inflation
    • Inflation: Students will learn about inflation, explore the concepts of credit and debt, and learn about opportunity occupations (well-paying jobs that don’t require a 4-year degree)
  • 8th Grade: Career Exploration
    • Career Exploration: Students will explore career interests and opportunities through panel discussions with Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland employees

Developing an Employable You

The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland is now accepting applications for the 2021–2022 Developing an Employable You Program. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, enabling students to apply throughout the school year.

Developing an Employable You is a personal and professional development program designed to help high school students transition successfully from high school into college or a career.

As part of this program, students will be exposed to a variety of topics, including:

  • Employability skills
  • Pathways to college or a career
  • Credit cards and budgets
  • Job Interviews, resumes, and cover letters
  • Paychecks and taxes
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process

Participating Ohio residents can have the opportunity to complete 10 of 15 requirements for the Ohio Means Jobs Readiness seal.

As part of the program, students will meet twice a month for 1-hour virtual sessions from November 2021 to April 2022. Sessions will run from 3:15 to 4:15 pm, EST. To receive credit for participating in the program, students must attend nine of the 11 virtual meetings.

You Make I.T. Better

Careers in I.T. and STEM are hot! You Make I.T. Better invites high school students to explore careers in information technology and STEM through hands-on skill building activities and job-shadowing experiences with employees in STEM professions at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

This year’s virtual program comprises 11, one-hour live module sessions that will consist of:

  • A STEM mentor's career journey
  • An interactive hands-on virtual activity (guided by STEM professionals)
  • A live Q&A session with a mentor

Live sessions begin on October 21 (Thursdays at 11:00 am–noon) and will continue through mid-April. All modules will be recorded and can be accessed at a later date. Shadowing opportunities may vary based on volunteers’ schedules. Please be on the lookout for future announcements.

Fed Futures

Spearheaded by Cleveland Fed President Dr. Loreta Mester with five other Federal Reserve Banks including FRB of Chicago, KC, Richmond (Charlotte Branch) and Dallas, the Fed Future Professionals Program (Fed Futures) is designed to introduce and develop knowledge and awareness of careers in the financial industry.

Fed Futures combines curricula and activities created by the Federal Reserve System to provide a continuum of skill development, training, and professional mentoring that highlights career paths in finance and economics. The year-round preparatory, paid program is designed to develop a diverse pool of future interns and employee candidates in the finance and economics fields throughout the Federal Reserve System.

The 2021–22 pilot program will include 10 students from the Fourth Federal Reserve District (Ohio, western Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky, and the northern panhandle of West Virginia) who will participate in:

  • Seven live virtual professional development sessions (monthly)
  • A three-month-long job shadowing experience
  • Bi-weekly mentoring from FRB professional throughout the program

What’s Next? Exploring Alternative Career Options

Many people don’t realize that the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland offers career opportunities that don’t require a traditional four-year college degree. What’s Next invites high school students to learn about the Cleveland Fed’s operational functions (Cash, Real Estate Services Group, and Law Enforcement Unit) through mentorship and job shadowing opportunities with Bank employees.

This year’s virtual program comprises 10, one-hour live sessions consisting of:

  • A mentor's career journey
  • An interactive hands-on virtual activity (focused on career-building skills)
  • Live Q&A session with a mentor

Live sessions begin October 12 (Tuesdays at 11:00 am–noon) and will continue through mid-April. All sessions will be recorded and can be accessed at a later date. Shadowing opportunities may vary based on volunteers’ schedules. Please be on the lookout for future announcements.

Economic Scholars Program

The Economic Scholars Program (ESP) is a free research conference for undergraduate students in economics that aims to build an environment where students can cultivate imaginative research and gain valuable experience presenting at a professional conference. The conference offers students the opportunity to share and gain feedback on high-quality undergraduate research in the form of a paper or poster presentation. This year’s conference will be a hybrid event that takes place on Friday May 6, 2022 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

The conference has five roles that are filled by undergraduate students, each of which has specific qualifications and registration deadlines.

Student roles

Peer Review Board Guidelines

Peer Review Board Members are responsible for evaluating all conference submissions against a rubric to determine which students should be offered a presentation or poster session. Peer Review Board members are still eligible to submit a conference proposal. Students must meet the following requirements to apply to be a peer reviewer.

  • Currently in enrolled in an undergraduate or 4+1 program or are recent graduates from Fall 2021 and Spring 2022
  • Completed or are concurrently enrolled in intermediate macroeconomics and microeconomics courses
  • Attend three 1-hour virtual training sessions that will cover expectations of peer review board members and demonstrate how to successfully evaluate a submission against a rubric
  • Attend periodic virtual meetings to review submissions for acceptance to the conference

Notification of acceptance: 02.04.2022

Presentation Guidelines-Paper

Current undergraduate students who are conducting independent or coauthored original research in all fields of economics and finance are encouraged to submit a paper for consideration. Papers can be empirical, theoretical, or analytical in nature. All papers submitted will be reviewed by the ESP Peer Review Board. Papers will be accepted based on the selection criteria detailed in the rubric. Paper presenters may also serve as discussants and/or session chairs. Students who wish to submit their research must meet the following requirements.

  • All accepted presenters must register and attend the conference (virtual or in-person)
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or 4+1 program or are recent graduates from Fall 2021 and Spring 2022
  • Research can be independent or co-authored by students

Notification of acceptance: 04.08.2022

Presentation Guidelines-Poster

Discussant Guidelines

Discussants hold two important responsibilities during the conference-helping those in the audience better understand the paper by reading the paper assigned very carefully and taking time to understand the paper’s contributions, its strengths and weaknesses and providing comments such as why and what the author can do to improve the paper. Discussants are responsible for responding to session presentations with 5-7 minutes of remarks. Students must meet the following requirements to apply to be a discussant.

  • All accepted discussants must register and attend the conference (virtual or in-person)
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or 4+1 program or recent graduates from Fall 2021 and Spring 2022
  • Completed or are concurrently enrolled in intermediate macroeconomics and microeconomics courses
  • Attend a 1-hour virtual training that will cover how to use clarifying questions, ideas for extension, and supportive suggestions to facilitate the learning by both the presenter and the audience

Notification of acceptance: 04.08.2022

Training session: 04.18.2022–04.25.2022

Session Chair Guidelines

Session chairs are responsible for timekeeping during the session, introducing presenters and discussants, and managing the audience question and answer portion of the session. Students must meet the following requirements to apply to be a session chair.

  • All accepted session chairs must register and attend the conference (virtual or in-person)
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or 4+1 program or recent graduates from Fall 2021 and Spring 2022
  • Attend a 30-minute virtual training that will review roles and responsibilities on the day of the event

Questionable Issues: Currency of the Holocaust

Questionable Issue: Currency of the Holocaust shares the gripping and seldom-told story of money inside Nazi concentration camps and ghettos. Stories of camps where prisoners were forced to exchange their money for worthless Nazi-issued paper provides a wrenching lesson in betrayal and loss. This exhibit is courtesy of the Holocaust Museum Houston, which is dedicated to educating people about the Holocaust, remembering the 6 million Jews and other innocent victims, and honoring the survivors’ legacy. The exhibit is presented with the support of the Maltz Museum.
