Manufacturing continues to be among the District’s more important industries. Districtwide, those employed in manufacturing industries make up about 16 percent of the workforce, whereas the comparable figure for the country is about 11 percent.The shares of employment the District devotes to health care, retail, management, and mining are also greater than the attendant shares for the United States.

Roughly three-quarters of the District’s counties derive a higher proportion of their earnings from manufacturing than the nation as a whole. Within the District, manufacturing earnings are especially concentrated in the area between Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

The Industrial Mix of Earnings

Whereas about 16 percent of the country’s earnings come from manufacturing, the comparable figure for the Fourth District is about 23 percent. By contrast, the United States draws a larger share of its earnings from the service sector than the Fourth District does.

There are about 40 Fortune 500 headquarters located in the Fourth District. Cleveland and Pittsburgh have the highest number of headquarters, followed by Cincinnati and Columbus.
