The result has been an increase in income of about 8 times for the District since 1970, versus an increase of about 11 times for the nation.

However, the growth in income per person has been similar for the region and nation since 1970, though the gap has grown somewhat in recent years. As of 2002, annual per capita personal income was approximately $29,000 in the District, compared with $31,000 for the country as a whole.
