Federal Agencies

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC): the primary federal regulator of state-chartered banks that are not members of the Federal Reserve System.

Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC): a formal interagency body empowered to prescribe uniform principles, standards, and report forms for the federal examination of financial institutions.

 

Federal Trade Commission (FTC): enforces federal consumer protection laws that prevent fraud, deception and unfair business practices.

 

Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN): one of the Treasury Department's primary agencies to oversee and implement policies to prevent and detect money laundering.


National Credit Union Administration: charters and supervises federal credit unions.

 

Office of the Comptroller of the Currency: charters, regulates, and supervises all national banks. Also supervises the federal branches and agencies of foreign banks.

Office of Thrift Supervision
: the primary regulator of all federally chartered and many state-chartered thrift institutions, which include savings banks and savings and loan associations.

 

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC): the primary overseer and regulator of the U.S. securities markets.

State Agencies

Fourth District state banking authorities - Contact info

Kentucky Department of Financial Institutions: charged with licensing, chartering, and regulating the activities of state-chartered/licensed depository and non-depository financial institutions in Kentucky.

Ohio Department of Financial Institutions: responsible for regulating a wide variety of state-chartered or licensed financial institutions in Ohio.

Pennsylvania Department of Banking: supervises Pennsylvania state-chartered banks, non-depository trust companies, savings and loan associations, and credit unions.

 

West Virginia Division of Banking: responsible for the supervision of financial institutions licensed and chartered by the State of West Virginia, as well as other entities which engage in financial activity in the state.
