Lodz | 10-pfennig coin, 1942 issue
Established in 1940, the Lodz (Litzmannstadt) Ghetto was the second-largest in Poland and had the most complex scrip structure of any ghetto, with hundreds of known monetary issues. Three issues of coins from Lodz are known. The first was just a pattern and never circulated. The two circulated issues were minted in 1942 and 1943 in the metal works within the ghetto. The coins pictured here were issued in 1942 and made from magnesium alloy recovered from downed Allied aircraft.
