Submission Requirements

  • An essay is a short literary composition. No other forms of writing (plays, poetry, rap, etc.) will be accepted.
  • Each student may submit only one essay. That essay must represent his or her original work.
  • Essays may only discuss novels and narratives (including short stories and short nonfiction essays) that students were assigned to read in their high school English, literature, or writing class. Poetry and plays are excluded from the contest.
  • Essays cannot contain profanity, belittling, or violent language. Essays with such language will be disqualified.
  • Do not assume the judges have read this book.
  • Each student must complete a Student Entry Form — signed by the student, parent or guardian, and teacher — and submit it with two copies of his or her essay. Essays will not be returned to the author.
  • Essays may be no longer than three typed pages, double-spaced, single-sided, 12-point type with one-inch margins. (Page limit does not include title page and bibliography.)
  • Essays must include a title page containing:
    • Essay title
    • Author’s name
    • School name, address, telephone number
    • Teacher’s name and e-mail address
    • References to primary and secondary sources must be clearly identified.
