Strategies for Improving Economic Mobility of Workers

This conference will bring together researchers, community development practitioners, and policy makers in an informed discussion regarding issues affecting the economic well being of low-income workers and vulnerable populations. Participants will gain valuable insights from interactive research session presentations and panel discussions on the role and the effectiveness of specific programs and initiatives on education, transportation, and workforce development.

Sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago's Economic Research and Consumer and Community Affairs Departments, in partnership with the Upjohn Institute for Employment Research.

Specific topics includes:

  • Past trends and projections in wage, work, and occupations in the US
  • Effects of relocating public housing residents in Chicago suburbs
  • Job networks and job access
  • Employment and advancement prospects for the working poor
  • Work training programs: broad issues in evaluations
  • Effectiveness of correctional vocation training programs
  • Financial aid for education of older workers
  • The role and effectiveness of workforce development programs
  • Workforce development partnerships: practitioner panels

The day-and-half conference will feature keynote presentations by the Honorable Edward P. Lazear, Chairman of the Council for Economic Advisers, Professor Alan S. Blinder, Gordon S. Rentschler Memorial Professor of Economics, Princeton University, and Alex Kotlowitz, Author and Journalist.
